Polyvinyl butyral resins

A family of polyvinyl butyral resins designed to provide enhanced flexibility, toughness and adhesion in solvent-borne coatings and inks, and adhesive or binder applications. Butvar resins are used in general industrial and wood coatings, wash primers, ceramic substances, composites and structural adhesives, and gravure or flexographic inks.

Butvar Polyvinyl Butyral resins have a combination of properties that make them a key ingredient in a variety of successful formulations. Some of these properties for which Butvar is widely used are:

  • Outstanding binding efficiency

  • Optical clarity

  • Adhesion to a large number of surfaces

  • Toughness combined with flexibility

  • Butvar polyvinyl butyral resins are recognised as the binder of choice in the processing of ceramic tape cast materials. The resin gives excellent green strength and flexibility to the ceramic tape. It is compatible with many common solvents and plasticisers and burns out cleanly during sintering.

Butvar resins are also used as binder media in thick film processing. Butvar resins are formulated in the solvent vehicle used to deposit the circuit pattern on the ceramic surface. The primary advantages of using Butvar resins are their solubility in a wide range of solvents and uniform adhesion to conductive metals.

Butvar Water based Polyvinyl Butyral Dispersion

Butvar Dispersions are stable dispersions of plasticised polyvinyl butyral in water. Films cast from Butvar Dispersion are tough and light transparent. They develop full strength properties when cast and dried at room temperature.

The Resins Division brings together a range of highly functional materials from significant companies such as Solutia, Marubeni, and Hercules. We offer Polyvinyl Butyral, Polyvinyl Formal, Styrene Maleic Anhydride and Styrene Allyl Alcohol, which have applications in the following areas:

PVB - Surface Coating, Wash Primers, Metal Coating, Wet Finish Adhesives, Ceramic Binders.
PVF - Wire Enamel, Structural Adhesives, Binder in Composite Structures.
SMA - Paper Sizing, Adhesive Modification, Pigment Dispersant, Hardener in Latex Paints.
SAA - Polyester Coatings, Alkyd Coatings, Urethane Coatings, Hard Resin Additive, Paints, Printing Inks.

We offer these grades of Butvar resin that cover a broad range of chemical and physical properties. These resins are generally well suited either as a major ingredient of a formulation or in smaller quantities to enhance the properties of other resins.
